Pontiac Solstice Mules Show Encouraging Handling as Steering Is Refined

MotorTrend drove engineering test mules and reports the upcoming Pontiac Solstice appears to offer lively, well-balanced handling ahead of its planned 2006 launch.

The test cars were driven on twisty, bumpy lanes in southern England and were judged too rough to represent the finished vehicle, though their mechanical systems revealed development priorities.

Steering componentry for the Solstice has been largely set, but tuning of mounts, bushings, geometry and power-assist is ongoing; the mules delivered a taut center feel and responsive turn-in but lacked progressive increase in wheel effort under cornering. General Motors executive Bob Lutz pushed the Solstice into public view in 2002, and Pontiac announced intentions to bring it to market as a 2006 model; engineers continue refining ride, steering and chassis balance.
