Racing Bulls’ Alan Permane Urges Phased F1 Energy-Management Tweaks Ahead of Sprint Weekends

Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane said Formula 1 should phase in energy-management rule tweaks across several races because upcoming sprint weekends will constrain teams' ability to test changes.

Stakeholders including the FIA, the 11 teams and power unit representatives are meeting to formulate and vote on 2026 regulation improvements. FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis told The Guardian a first raft of solutions will be discussed on Monday, followed by an e-vote and possible implementation as early as the Miami Grand Prix.

Permane, of Racing Bulls, warned that Miami and Montreal are sprint events with only a single 60-minute practice on Friday, leaving little time to trial significant energy-management changes alongside expected aerodynamic upgrades; Monaco's low-speed layout is also a poor proving ground.

Tombazis said the tweaks should avoid hardware changes, may need settings or software updates, and could be rolled out in phases to tackle closing speeds and driver satisfaction, with Barcelona and Austria seen as more suitable later venues.
