Rare Kaiser-Jeep CJ-5 Camper Ad Found in June 1969 Popular Science

A June 1969 issue of Popular Science carries an advertisement for the Kaiser-Jeep CJ-5 Camper, described as a rare factory option with just 336 units produced.

The ad presented the CJ-5 Camper as a hybrid slide-in camper and towed trailer intended for use with the Kaiser-Jeep V6 engine rated at 160 hp, and it noted an added axle to compensate for the CJ-5’s short wheelbase. The Popular Science issue also includes period ads for aftermarket air conditioners for import cars and a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle dashboard, alongside more eccentric entries such as a concrete planter advertisement. The piece illustrates how automaker and aftermarket advertising showcased practical and novelty vehicle accessories in 1969.
