Red Bull May Garden-Leave Gianpiero Lambiase After McLaren Move, David Coulthard Says

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard said on the Up To Speed podcast that Red Bull may place race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase on gardening leave to protect sensitive car developments after Lambiase signed to join McLaren in 2028.

Coulthard warned that while Lambiase remains under contract with Red Bull through 2027 he could be excluded from development discussions and restricted from accessing certain factory data. He compared the situation to his own 1995 move from Williams to McLaren, when he faced similar limits on factory access.

Coulthard added that McLaren would likely prefer an early release so Lambiase could join sooner, but said Red Bull has little incentive to ease the transition if it risks giving a rival an advantage. The comments appeared on the Up To Speed podcast and reflect Coulthard’s view rather than a team decision.
