Content creator Leanna Coy reported that she avoided a roughly $100 late-return charge from a rental car company by providing time-stamped evidence after using an unattended key drop at a small airport.
Coy says she returned the car well before the noon deadline, found no staffed counter, used a key drop on a staff member’s advice, and later disputed the fee with a dashboard screenshot, bank statement, gas receipt, and her flight itinerary, ultimately receiving a refund.
Travel expert Rick Steves says unexpected charges are easier to dispute when renters document the vehicle’s condition at pickup, photograph existing damage, and save final fuel receipts.
The guidance aims to help renters prevent disputes with rental car companies by recording return times, preserving receipts, and asking for a final condition report when possible.
