Slate to Begin Limited Production of Budget EV Pickup, Emphasizes Customizable Unpainted Design

Slate will begin limited production of its budget electric pickup later this summer, with first deliveries planned before the end of the year and an estimated starting price under $30,000.

At the New York International Auto Show, Slate invited the author to inspect the vehicle and will discuss exterior design with Gus Bizyk, head of Slate's exterior design. The truck uses unpainted plastic body panels and Slate plans factory wraps and accessory packages for customization, including an option to convert it into a two-door SUV.

The Slate is presented as a bare-bones, budget vehicle with minimal trim, and the author plans to question Gus Bizyk about how the design team balanced cost constraints with passenger comfort and perceived quality. The author said engineers or technical representatives were not present at the preview, so specific details about battery, motor and driving range were not available.
