Gus Bizyk, Slate's head of exterior design, said the team sought a simple, timeless design that can be customized from the ground up and noted that seven-inch round headlights support aftermarket options.

The prototype features unpainted composite body panels intended for wraps, interchangeable fascias, bolt-on dashboard accessories, an option to add rear seats to convert into a two-door SUV, and a detailed online configurator.

Slate must now compete on pricing and appeal against low-cost crossovers and compact pickups as the company launches into a market where U.S. EV demand has flattened.
