Stellantis is in discussions with Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly about potentially producing Leapmotor vehicles at its Brampton plant, and Bloomberg reported General Motors may help build Wuling models in Mexico.
Stellantis bought a 20% stake in Leapmotor in 2023 and later formed the Leapmotor International joint venture focused on global production. The Brampton facility previously lost manufacturing to a U.S. plant and is now under consideration for Leapmotor production.
Bloomberg said Canada has opened its market to Chinese-built cars, and that move has attracted interest from automakers seeking North American manufacturing options.
Executives at the New York Auto Show told Bloomberg that trade tensions and geopolitical developments are influencing sales and production decisions for automakers, shaping partnerships with Chinese manufacturers such as Leapmotor and Wuling.
