Driver Oliver Solberg retired from Friday’s Croatia Rally after clipping a bank 4.8km into the Vodice–Brest 1 stage, spinning 360 degrees and coming to rest off the road in his Toyota GR Yaris Rally1.
Fans and competitors attempted to assist but the car became beached; Safari Rally Kenya winner Takamoto Katsuta said he backed off after receiving information that Solberg had been involved in an incident.
Toyota driver Elfyn Evans won the opening stage by 8.1 seconds from team-mate Sami Pajari and then extended his rally lead to 15.9 seconds after posting the fastest time in a later stage.
M-Sport chose soft tyres, which helped M-Sport driver Jon Armstrong set the third-fastest time before a front-left puncture, while Hyundai driver Adrien Fourmaux lost over a minute to a front-right puncture and Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville moved up to third overall.
