Volkswagen Confirms Atlas Cross Sport Return and Full-Hybrid Plan at NY Auto Show

Volkswagen announced at the New York Auto Show that the Atlas Cross Sport will return and that a traditional full-hybrid powertrain will be offered for the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and Tiguan.

Kjell Gruner, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, confirmed the Atlas Cross Sport will be shown "in due time" and said it would not appear "two years" from now. The Atlas family sold 102,608 units in 2025, with the standard Atlas representing roughly 70 percent of those sales and the Cross Sport about 30 percent.

Gruner said the new powertrain will be a full hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid, citing limited market demand and added battery weight and cost for PHEVs. Volkswagen previously revealed the second-generation 2027 Atlas with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine and said the hybrid will arrive during the SUV's mid-cycle refresh.
