Volkswagen Halts Chattanooga Id.4 EV Build to Ramp Atlas SUV Production

Volkswagen will stop building its ID.4 electric SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant and redirect the facility's capacity to produce the new Atlas, with ID.4 production winding down in mid‑April.

Volkswagen said the move is intended to shift the Chattanooga plant's focus to higher‑volume models that support sustained growth in North America; the Atlas is Volkswagen's second best‑selling nameplate in the U.S., behind the Tiguan. Volkswagen recently revealed the 2027 Atlas, which it says is built on a new platform, offers three rows of seating and an updated engine, with a hybrid variant expected later.

Volkswagen said current ID.4 inventory in the U.S. will continue to be sold and that a future version of the ID.4 is planned for North America, with details to be announced later. The automaker said it could not confirm whether a 2027 model‑year ID.4 will be offered in the U.S. and is exploring additional vehicles tailored to U.S. consumer needs.
