Volkswagen Keeps U.S. Pickup Option Open, Eyes Small MQB-Based Trucks

Kjell Gruner, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said at a media roundtable during the 2026 New York Auto Show that Volkswagen "wouldn't rule out" building a pickup for the U.S. market.

Gruner said Volkswagen is examining B- and C-segment pickups that could leverage the MQB unibody architecture and noted that both unibody and body-on-frame designs "can be successful" depending on the intended application.

The small unibody segment includes the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, which is slated to go out of production this year; Volkswagen has previously shown the Tarok and Atlas Tanoak concepts and plans to build the Tukan in South America next year.

An MQB-based unibody truck is considered the most likely path since Volkswagen does not currently have a body-on-frame platform ready, and Gruner did not specify powertrain details or a U.S. timetable.
