Volkswagen Pauses Chattanooga Id.4 EV Production to Boost Atlas SUV Output

Volkswagen will end ID.4 production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant in mid-April to free assembly capacity for increased Atlas SUV output, and the company says 2026 model-year ID.4s from existing U.S. stock should last into 2027.

Automotive News reported U.S. ID.4 sales rose 31% to 22,373 in 2025 after buyers acted before federal tax-credit changes, while Motor Intelligence said Volkswagen averaged $7,756 in incentives per ID.4 in the first quarter.

Volkswagen moved ID.4 production from Germany to Chattanooga in 2022 as part of an $800 million plant investment, and the company told employees and the UAW that hourly workers on ID.4 roles will be reassigned by seniority.

Volkswagen said a future North American version of the ID.4 is planned, but details, including where it will be built, will be announced later.
