Volkswagen’s 2027 Atlas Gains MIB4 Electrical Architecture, New Safety and Comfort Upgrades

Volkswagen’s 2027 Atlas adopts the MIB4 electrical architecture, increasing centralization, computing power and an Ethernet backbone to improve responsiveness and support new driver-assist functions.

The architecture enables Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite as standard, including lane centering with driver-initiated lane changes and an automated safe pull-over if a medical emergency is detected; it does not include a hands-free driving mode. A front center airbag has been added to separate front passengers in side crashes, a change Volkswagen expects will help preserve the Atlas’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ standing.

The MIB4 system also supports 48-volt electrification, with a hybrid Atlas due at a midcycle refresh (HEV, PHEV or both still TBD) and promised electric boost for improved performance. Standard interior upgrades include larger infotainment screens (12.9-inch base, 15.0-inch on other trims), dual Qi2 wireless charging pads, seven USB-C ports, upgraded audio, ambient lighting and additional comfort amenities on higher trims.
