VW CEO: Golf GTI, Golf R and Jetta Will Stay Despite SUV Dominance

Kjell Gruner, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said at a roundtable during the 2026 New York International Auto Show that despite SUVs making up nearly 80% of Volkswagen’s U.S. sales in 2025, the Golf GTI, Golf R and the Jetta will remain important to the brand.

Gruner noted the combined Golf lineup sold roughly 10,000 units in the U.S. last year but called those models "brand shapers" important for identity and "smiles per mile"; he also cited the ID.Buzz when listing Volkswagen’s icons and noted the electric van skips the 2026 model year stateside.

Volkswagen sold 54,291 Jetta sedans in 2025, a 43.5% drop from 2024 that still places the Jetta close to the Taos in annual volume, and Gruner said the company will keep sedans and hatchbacks for variety rather than focusing solely on SUVs.
