Virginia Bans Renewal of Robert E. Lee Specialty License Plates That Funded Sons of Confederate Veterans

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed a law banning renewals of state-issued Robert E. Lee and Sons of Confederate Veterans specialty license plates.

The law does not invalidate existing plates immediately; owners may continue to drive with their current plates until they expire and must then choose among Virginia's 342 other specialty plates or a regular plate.

State Delegate Dan Helmer, who introduced the bill, posted a video saying the Confederacy and its leaders do not deserve commemoration; the Southern Poverty Law Center has described the Sons of Confederate Veterans as holding "strong neo-Confederate principles."

Virginia had shared revenue from those specialty plates with sponsoring organizations under a DMV program that returns $15 of a $25 annual fee after qualifying sales, and the state allows groups to sponsor new specialty plate designs subject to application thresholds.
