Mercedes-Benz 190E Evolution II Homologation Car to Appear at RM Sotheby’s Monaco Sale

A Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II homologation road car, one of 502 produced and equipped with a Cosworth-developed four-cylinder rated at 232 horsepower, will be offered at RM Sotheby's Monaco sale in a couple of weeks.

The Evolution II was a street-legal homologation model for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the race derivative helped Mercedes-Benz win DTM Constructors' titles in 1991 and 1992. All 502 road cars were finished in Blue Black Metallic and carried widened arches, prominent aero, larger Brembo brakes and a dogleg gearbox.

Cosworth developed a lightweight aluminum cylinder head to convert the M102 2.3-liter eight-valve unit into the Evo II's 16-valve engine after the standard engine made about 130 horsepower. The road car's 232 horsepower complemented track-focused brakes, wheels and suspension, while the race car shed roughly 700 pounds for competition.
