Polestar’s Scott Maynard Says PHEVs Are ‘the Worst of Both Worlds’ as EV Range Improves

Scott Maynard, Polestar Australia managing director, told Australia's Drive that plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are "the worst of both worlds" and should be phased out.

Maynard said PHEVs combine the complexity of an electric drivetrain with the weight and upkeep of a petrol drivetrain, increasing maintenance requirements and potential failure points.

He told Drive that modern electric vehicles now push well in excess of 500 kilometres of range, are fast and more economical to run, and that these improvements make PHEVs less relevant.

Scott Maynard said PHEV technology has "served its purpose" and suggested drivers who lack home charging consider regular hybrids, while those seeking lower running costs should choose EVs.
