F1’s Stefano Domenicali Defends 2026 Regulations, Signals Possible Shift to Sustainable Fuels

F1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali defended the 2026 technical regulations and said future cycles will likely place greater emphasis on sustainable fuels and the internal combustion engine while acknowledging driver concerns and criticism from Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.

Domenicali made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Motorsport in London, stressing that the regulations were shaped by the automotive industry's move toward electrification and the need to remain relevant to manufacturers such as Audi and Honda.

Max Verstappen has been the most outspoken critic, after testing the new ruleset in 2023 he refused extended simulator work, described the 2026 car as "Formula E on steroids" when the new machinery appeared on track in Bahrain, and raised issues such as lift-and-coast and energy-conserving "super clipping."

Domenicali said he speaks with Verstappen regularly and welcomed constructive input, adding F1 will address valid points together while the FIA will propose any formal changes for the next regulatory cycle.
