Ford Mustang GTD Competition Claims 6:40.835 Nürburgring Lap, Fastest American Car

Ford's Mustang GTD Competition recorded a 6:40.835 lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, becoming the fastest American car to complete the circuit.

The Mustang GTD Competition's time beat the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X's 6:49.275 lap and improved on Ford's previous GTD result by more than 11 seconds; the run was logged in the prototype/pre-production class on the official Nürburgring lists.

Ford says the Competition model features a retuned supercharged 5.2-liter V‑8 that surpasses the standard GTD's 815-hp figure, plus weight-saving measures such as lighter dampers, racing seats and magnesium wheels fitted with grippier tires.

Aerodynamic updates include added front dive planes, a modified rear wing and carbon-fiber rear aero discs, and Ford confirms the street-legal special edition will be sold in very limited numbers with more details to follow; the North American application window has reopened.
