A Volkswagen owner who had paid $946 for earlier repairs was told she needed a new engine control unit (ECU), but TikTok creator and mechanic Menjicar found a pinhole leak in the car's evaporative emissions (EVAP) line instead.
Menjicar scanned the vehicle's onboard diagnostics, identified an EVAP trouble code, and used a smoke machine to locate the small leak rather than replacing expensive components.
Because the plastic line is part of a larger assembly on many Volkswagen models, the repair required replacing the full unit; the owner opted for a new hose from the dealer and the system was resealed and trouble codes cleared.
The TikTok video shows the $946 initial bill, has more than 24,000 views, and does not disclose the final repair invoice; Menjicar says the fix avoided an unnecessary ECU replacement.
