Haas’ Ollie Bearman Urges Removal of Lift-And-Coast From 2026 F1 Hybrid Rules

Haas Formula 1 driver Ollie Bearman told the Up To Speed podcast he wants the lift-and-coast element removed from the 2026 powertrain regulations.

The new rules, aimed at an approximate 50:50 split between internal combustion and electric power, have caused heavy battery clipping and de-rating on long straights, prompting the FIA and Formula 1 to consider tweaks during an April break.

Bearman's call followed his high-speed crash at the Japanese Grand Prix. He encountered the much slower Alpine driver Franco Colapinto harvesting energy, lost control while avoiding him and hit the barriers.

On the podcast Bearman said removing lift-and-coast would allow drivers to push flat-out in qualifying and avoid counterintuitive lift-offs on straights, and he suggested harvesting at minus 350 kW instead of the current negative 250 kW limit.
