Ayrton Senna Tests 1992 Penske IndyCar at Firebird Raceway

Ayrton Senna, the three-time Formula 1 champion, tested a 1992 Penske IndyCar at Firebird Raceway West on December 10, 1992, in a last-minute arrangement recounted by Nigel Beresford, now technical director of Dragon Racing in Formula E.

Emerson Fittipaldi drove a 1992 Penske early in the session and posted 49.7-second laps, and Ayrton Senna completed 14 laps with a best time of 49.5 seconds while getting used to the car's sequential gearbox and turbo behaviour.

Nigel Beresford said Senna found the Penske heavier and less nimble than a Formula 1 car and noted the engine felt very drivable despite different sound and rev characteristics. Beresford added the team softened the rear springs and disconnected the rear anti-roll bar to test sensitivity.
