FAA Medical Review Grounds Pilot Trainee Ahead of Planned First Solo

A pilot trainee's practical flight training has been stalled after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Oklahoma City opened a detailed review of medical records because of the trainee's diabetes, preventing issuance of an FAA medical certificate.

The trainee had been cleared for a first solo in February, but the FAA review has paused flying for months with no clear timeline; the trainee manages diabetes with diet and Ozempic and supplied records to the Aviation Medical Examiner. The trainee had been preparing to film the first solo.

To stay current the trainee is continuing ground study and simulator practice, and says lessons from roughly 35 hours of flying—summarised as "aviate, navigate, communicate"—also translate to safer car driving.
