GM Retains 3.0l Duramax Diesel in Silverado and GMC Sierra; 400-Mile Denali Drive Highlights Torque and MPG

General Motors continues to offer the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel in its half-ton Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, and a 400-mile drive in a GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate underscored strong torque, fuel economy and range.

Ford dropped the Power Stroke diesel from the F-150 in 2021 and Ram removed the EcoDiesel V6 from the 1500 in 2023; GM’s Duramax inline-six is rated at 305 horsepower, 495 lb-ft of torque and up to 25 mpg combined on 2WD models, per EPA estimates.

With diesel averaging $5.63 a gallon, fuel-cost savings versus gasoline are likely marginal, but the author reported near-instant torque, grumbly engine character and long tank range during hauling; the Sierra Denali Ultimate tested lists for $84,400 base and $86,790 as-tested including destination.

The Sierra is essentially a GMC-badged extension of the Silverado and remains a high-volume product for GMC within General Motors’ broader pickup lineup.
