Gordie Howe International Bridge Opening Unsettled as Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority Finishes System Tests

Officials say the Gordie Howe International Bridge's opening date remains undecided as the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority completes testing and adjustments to tolling, traffic systems and lighting.

Heather Grondin, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority's chief relations officer, said adjustments require retesting or recalibration across the system, including the tolling system, traffic management center and the bridge's aesthetic lights.

President Donald Trump previously said he would block the opening unless the United States is "fully compensated for everything we have given [Canada]," while the $6.4 billion crossing was funded by Canada.

A recent economic analysis estimated taxpayers and the bridge authority could lose $7 million per week if opening is delayed, while over 12,000 transponders have been ordered and some commercial traffic is rerouting to the Blue Water Bridge.
