The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced an initial decision to permanently ban airbags produced by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN) after opening an investigation in October 2025.
NHTSA said DTN inflators ruptured in 12 frontal crashes over three years, sending metal shrapnel into cabins and causing 10 fatalities and two serious injuries; the inflators were used as replacement airbags. NHTSA said the DTN inflators were manufactured in China, believed to have been illegally imported, and were found in vehicles spanning 2017–2022 model years, predominantly Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata, though the agency did not rule out other models.
Crashes occurred in 10 states, and NHTSA noted all 12 cases involved DTN-produced frontal inflators. By law, NHTSA must allow public comment and give DTN an opportunity to challenge the decision before a final ruling is issued.
