Red Bull Engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to Join McLaren in 2028, Jos Verstappen Says Family Knew

Gianpiero Lambiase, Red Bull's race engineer, has signed with McLaren to become chief racing officer in 2028, and Jos Verstappen, Max Verstappen's father, said he and Max Verstappen, Red Bull driver and four-time world champion, knew about the move.

Lambiase will join McLaren after his current Red Bull contract expires and will report to Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal.

Jos Verstappen told RaceXpress that they had known about the departure for some time, that it was a "huge opportunity" and that Red Bull will need to find a replacement.

Max Verstappen previously told Ziggo Sport in 2021 he would "only work with" Lambiase and said "As soon as he stops, I stop too"; Max Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028 but has said he may consider leaving after 2026 if he does not enjoy the new regulations, which he described as "Formula E on steroids."
