Volkswagen to End U.S. ID4 EV Production in 2026 as Chattanooga Shifts to 2027 Atlas

Volkswagen will end production of the ID4 compact electric SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant by April 2026, and following an earlier suspension of ID Buzz sales this will leave Volkswagen with no all-electric models for sale in the U.S.

Volkswagen says the ID4 will remain on sale in the U.S. while dealer inventory of 2026 models lasts, and the model will continue in Europe where it is receiving a facelift and is expected to be renamed the ID Tiguan under Volkswagen’s new EV branding.

Production at Chattanooga will shift to the second-generation 2027 Atlas and other higher-volume models, with Volkswagen confirming to MotorTrend that 2026 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport production will continue during the transition and that 2027 Atlas production begins this summer for dealer arrival by fall.

Volkswagen said it will help ID4 line workers move to other positions within the Chattanooga plant and is working with the recently formed union to assist in retaining those employees.
