Horse Powertrain has introduced the X-Range C15 Direct Drive, an all-in-one hybrid drivetrain intended to let automakers convert existing battery-electric vehicle (BEV) platforms into hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) more quickly and at lower cost.
Horse Powertrain, a 2024 joint venture of Renault and Geely joined last year by Saudi Aramco, is pitching the X-Range C15 Direct Drive amid falling U.S. EV registrations, reduced federal EV tax credits, tariffs and a wave of canceled BEV projects.
The company built the C15 as a 1.5-liter inline-four with direct injection that produces up to 94 hp naturally aspirated and up to 161 hp with a turbo, includes a generator and was developed to run on e‑fuel for use as a range-extender. Horse Powertrain operates 18 manufacturing plants and five R&D centers across three continents and supplies more than eight million powertrains annually to customers including Geely, Renault, Volvo, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Proton and Mitsubishi.
