FIA ADUO Power‑Unit Rule Allows Mid‑Season Upgrades; Wolff Demands Transparency

The FIA has built the Additional Design and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) into current Formula 1 power unit regulations to prevent a repeat of 2014, measuring internal combustion engine output every six races and granting one upgrade to manufacturers 2–4% down and two upgrades if more than 4% behind.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, told Motorsport.com that ADUO should let struggling engine manufacturers catch up without "leapfrogging" and warned decisions must be made with absolute precision, clarity and transparency to avoid gamesmanship.

Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari team principal, said in Shanghai that the ADUO "will be an opportunity for us to close the gap", while rivals note Ferrari's own strategic choices, such as using a smaller turbo, complicate assessment of any power deficit.

The FIA will discuss ADUO qualification with teams and manufacturers during the April break amid calendar changes, and Toto Wolff stressed the mechanism should help only those genuinely behind, not alter the competitive order.
