Marco Apicella’s Lone F1 Start for Jordan Ends in 800m Crash at 1993 Italian GP

Marco Apicella, an Italian racing driver, had his sole Formula 1 start for the Jordan team at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix end in a crash about 800 metres into the race.

Apicella earned a late call-up to Jordan to partner Rubens Barrichello, a rookie Brazilian driver, after Thierry Boutsen, a driver, departed, with the team using the second seat to trial different drivers. The incident prevented Apicella from continuing in Formula 1.

Before the Jordan opportunity, Marco Apicella was a Formula 3000 regular with teams including First Racing and Paul Stewart Racing, scoring multiple podiums and a second place at Monza in 1988 and finishing fourth overall in 1989. He had tested Minardi cars and was linked to the Modena project, which featured a car penned by former Ferrari designer Mauro Forghieri.
