Paul Di Resta Outpaced Sebastian Vettel in Tight 2006 F3 Euro Series, Scoring Five Poles and Five Wins

Scottish driver Paul Di Resta outperformed future four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel in the 2006 Formula 3 Euro Series, securing five pole positions and five race victories for ASM (soon to be ART Grand Prix).

Di Resta moved from Britain’s Manor Motorsport to ASM in his second F3 season, joining a lineup including Sebastian Vettel, Giedo van der Garde and Kamui Kobayashi. The 2006 season produced 11 different winners across 20 rounds.

Di Resta’s one-lap pace was decisive; he secured five poles by tiny margins and qualified outside the top three only twice, while his five wins included a Le Mans victory after an opening-lap gain.

Di Resta told Autosport the season had been "fairly straightforward" despite setbacks and that his team never lost the championship lead after round two. He said Sebastian Vettel’s role as a BMW Sauber Formula 1 test driver explained why Vettel attracted attention.
