Saudi Aramco has developed a Dedicated Hybrid Engine (DHE) concept and disclosed technical details of a compact 1,599cc inline three-cylinder proof-of-concept aimed at improving hybrid efficiency and reducing cost.
Aramco is a 10 percent investor in Horse Powertrain, a joint venture formed when Renault and Geely/Volvo spun off combustion-engine operations, and Horse specializes in turnkey engines and range-extenders for hybridization.
The DHE pairs a motor-generator and planetary gearset at each end of the crankshaft and reimagines the engine as a cam-in-block, monoblock pushrod unit with two valves per cylinder, roller bearings, a 12 mm crank offset, no accessory drive, and electrified auxiliaries to operate within an efficiency-focused strong-hybrid duty cycle.
